Rookie Registrations
Registrations of all 12 and 13 year olds who wish to do the Rookie Surf Lifeguard programme this year are now being taken. See contact details below.
Rookie Programme
Rookie season is aligned with Surf Patrols (their calendar).
This programme is aimed at 12-13 year olds who aspire to become surf lifeguards. It is an introductory course where Rookies will attend patrols at their convenience throughout the summer months and be mentored by senior guards. The programme consists of ten modules that Rookies are trained and graded upon to attain their surf lifesaving certificate. These include; first aid, surf swimming, radio operation, rescues, patrol set up and several others that lifeguards are required to know and be able to use as part of their daily surf patrols. Rookies must complete at least 5 patrols (minimum of 20 hours) throughout the season to complete this training.
Though this programme is not compulsory, it is highly recommended and will make future training as a surf lifeguard so much easier, which you can do from the age of 14 onwards.
BOP Surf Lifesaving hold an Interclub Rookie Challenge (teams competition) in mid January each year (date yet to be set) which members can participate in.
Each year Whakatane selects a 'Rookie of the year'. This person is ideally aged 13 years, has shown commitment throughout the season, has strong surf swimming ability and can communicate and display good theory skills that they have learnt throughout the season. This person will go on to represent our club at the 'BOP Rookie of the Year' competition which is held at the end of the season. Last season this competition was won by one of our members who is now going on to train as a surf lifeguard.
Anyone completing the programme as a 12 year old is encouraged to go through the programme again the following year as a 13 year old to hone their skills and knowledge and compete for the title of 'Rookie of the year'.
This programme is a great introduction to becoming a Surf Lifeguard.
Members will be encouraged to join this programme and names collated at the start of each season on registration day and a general email sent out to all existing club members.

Calling all Rookies for the 2020/21 season
Hello Parents & Caregivers
Do you have a 12 or 13 year old (this is their age of the child as of 01 October) returning to the club for the 2020/21 season?
If so they will be joining the Rookie ranks.
What is a Rookie? The Rookie Life Guard Programme has been developed to incorporate junior members into the patrolling environment where they will learn about lifesaving education, beach management and get patrol experience while completing modules.
Why? This programme will set them up for when they turn 14 and can sit the lifeguard award.
When? This programme runs alongside junior surf on a Sunday between 1000 – 1200.
To assist with planning I am interested in getting an idea of numbers for the season, so send me an email (to the email address below) with the name and/or any questions you may have.
Thanks
Tim McKay
